Co-Counsel partners with community members, nonprofits, law firms, and companies to meet the urgent and evolving legal needs of immigrant communities, signing 18 nonprofit partnerships since October 2023. Their major project, the Community Pro Se SIJS (CPSS) Pilot, addresses the lack of legal help for young people eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) and their guardians. The pilot breaks down the complex SIJS process into phases, offering community education, pro se workshops, and volunteer training to help participants file necessary family court and USCIS documents.

Magnolia Tree Earth Center of Bedford Stuyvesant, Inc. was founded in 1972 by Hattie Carthan, a visionary environmentalist who sought to protect a rare Magnolia Grandiflora tree and three brownstones on Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn from demolition. Ms. Carthan mobilized her community to save and preserve the site, ultimately achieving landmark status for both the buildings and the tree — now recognized as New York State’s only living landmark. Her leadership inspired urban greening efforts long before environmentalism was mainstream, planting over 1,500 trees in the neighborhood and establishing the Tree Corps to care for local greenery.

The National Police Accountability Project (“NPAP”) is a national organization dedicated to holding police and correctional officers accountable to professional and constitutional standards. Its 550+ members litigate the thousands of cases of police and correctional officer misconduct that do not make national headlines. Since the organization’s founding in 1999, NPAP has focused on helping attorneys effectively represent victims of police misconduct in civil rights cases through education, co-counsel support, and by improving laws via appellate and legislative advocacy.
